What Digital Accessibility Means
Digital accessibility means that websites, applications, and IT systems can be used by everyone, including people with disabilities, without barriers or discrimination.
In Italy, this principle is outlined in Law No. 4 of January 9, 2004 (commonly known as “Legge Stanca”) and its later updates, which define accessibility as the ability of digital services to deliver content and functionality effectively to users who rely on assistive technologies or personalized setups.
At the European level, the European Accessibility Act (Directive EU 2019/882) builds on this by introducing harmonized requirements across the EU to improve access to digital products and services. This includes public sector websites, mobile apps, and private company services, which must comply with shared technical standards by June 28, 2025.
